The City That Never Sleeps

At 54,556 square miles, New York is about 170 times bigger than Singapore. The subject of countless love songs, novels, films and artwork, there are so many things to see and do in New York, United States of America.

New York is a state of superlatives, there is always something for everyone – from the vast collection of iconic Times Square, Central Park, Niagara Falls, Grand Central Terminal to the tallest buildings, biggest museums, dazzling spectacle of Broadway and world class galleries, top universities and the most highly acclaimed golfing landscape in the United States.

New York City is the largest city in the state and the world’s 10 most visited cities, and one of the places that captured my heart and soul. One of the first things I would notice is the feeling of “I have known this place forever,” during my first visit in the year 2009.

During my recent visit to New York City, I spent most days reminiscing and visiting the popular neighborhood.

• Uptown – Times Square, The Museums (Metropolitan Museum of Art, Guggenheim Museum, American Museum of National History, Met Breuer, Shakespeare Garden)
• Midtown – Empire State Building, Museum of Modern Art, Central Park
• Lower Manhattan – Statue of Liberty, 9/11 Memorial & Museum, Greenwich Village, Little Italy, Chinatown
• Brooklyn – DUMBO, Brooklyn Bridge, Williamsburg
• Bronx – Yankee Stadium

A generation ago, Little Italy thrive in New York city. The Italian immigrants settled down in Manhattan neighborhood in the late 1800s, bringing their customs, food and language. That heritage remains evident today, but now what is left of the neighborhood is more touristic – restaurants and storefronts with a lack of touch of the Italian community.

To me, Times Square epitomizes the manic nature of New York, and it is frenetic at any time regardless of the time you go. Some will love it, and some will hate it. A friend said that she would rather skip this iconic sight as she found it too crowded and overwhelming. I have a different opinion. I definitely loved the energy of Times Square. Uplifting and crazy, there are always a story to tell. The big crowds with diverse people from all walks of life, this is the perfect people watching platform and a giant proverbial stage for all the extremes of humanity.

The street performers added to the exciting entertainment around Times Square as they try to make a buck out of tourists in every conceivable way, from costumed (or almost naked) street characters who expect hefty tips for a picture, to street hustlers who are trying to sell and force CDs into your hand. Personally, Times Square is truly a great learning experience to behold.

One thing I noticed differently on this trip is the distinct scent of New York City – weed. You can find a weed store on every corner. Marijuana and cannabis products are for sale, out in the open, everywhere. New York legalized recreational marijuana in the spring of 2021 and since then the trucks selling them have popped up on corners across the city.
