Hats has been worn since Ancient Times. It started as just one more protection against rain and sunshine, and then developed into something more – status, ceremonial, religious, safety, or as a fashion accessory.
Wherever we are in the world, hats have some interesting stories to tell. We can see the evidence of hats in historic costumes through the written word and appearances in art such as wall paintings and statues, and old historical books.
In Algerian cave at Tassili n’ Ajjer, the painting shows men wearing turban like head coverings that have been dated between 6,000–10,000 years old.
In Europe during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, a man’s occupation, religion, and status could be immediately understood by his headgear.
In Malay culture, “Songkok”, “Tengkolok” or “Tanjak” has been donned for more than hundred years as a traditional headgear. The “Tengkolok” or “Tanjak” is made from long cloth folded and tied in particular style. Nowadays, it is typically worn by the groom during Malay wedding ceremonies.
Today, the Tengkolok and Tanjak is making a trendy comeback. Wearing the traditional malay headgear is gaining ground among the public, especially during malay festive season – Hari Raya.
During my trip to Lake Placid, New York, I visited a hat shop Where Did You Get That Hat which is located at the Main Street. They have an extensive collection of hats and fashion accessories, and I was lucky enough to wear some.
“We have unique fun hats for every occasion and holidays.” said Vicky, the owner. “We focus on bringing high quality and affordable hats for all,” she added. This friendly and lovely owner surely knows her business best. There are many plans in the pipeline to boost the business and I cannot wait to return.
